068-The Quran: Where Are the Five Prayers Listed?
Published on Jan 4, 2011 by Pfander Films
Muslims know they are to pray five times a day. It is one of the five ‘pillars’ of Islam (Salat). They believe the five prayers come from the Qur’an itself, but they have never investigated it. Watch as Jay brings up this question at Speaker’s Corner, concerning where the ‘five’ prayers originated, to a Muslim who has brought his ladder alongside Jay, to heckle him. The Muslim is caught off guard and is not able to answer his question at all, remonstrating that it is from Muhammad that we get the prayers. Jay shows that there are only three prayers listed in the Qur’an, and in order to find the five prayers, one has to go all the way to Al-Bukhari, who was writing in the 9th century, a good 220-240 years later. This is therefore a 9th century construct, and not an injunction which came from Muhammad at all. The Muslims in the crowd are justifiably angry and loud in this video!
